The Story
I want to be upfront about what happened. There are no excuses for disrupting the peace.

Megan's Birthday
We were celebrating Megan's birthday, and things got a bit out of hand on my part.

The Ambulance Incident
While I was peeing nearby, a burst of curiosity to see whether the ambulance was unlocked led me to test its door. I had no ill intent, but I now recognize this was inappropriate. I deeply regret this action and understand the seriousness of potentially hindering emergency services.

Police Involvement
Understandably, my actions led to the police being called. This escalated the situation and caused unnecessary worry for everyone. I take full responsibility for this outcome.
"Megan, happy belated birthday. I am so incredibly sorry that my behaviour cast a shadow over your celebration. You deserved a carefree and happy day, and I regret that I detracted from that. I hope you can forgive me."
Taking Responsibility
Saying sorry isn't enough. Here's what I've done since:
- โ๏ธ Spoke with everyone directly affected. I met with the law enforcement and the neighbors whose evening was disrupted to offer a personal apology and answer any questions they had.
- โ๏ธ Reached out to Johnson County Emergency Medical Services. I phoned their administrative office and sent a written letter expressing my regret for delaying their response and reaffirming my respect for their work.
- โ๏ธ Educated myself. I completed FEMAโs free online course on the civilian role around emergency scenes and reviewed Iowa Code ยง 719.1 regarding interference with public-safety officials.
- โ๏ธ Gave back. I donated $1 to the Iowa City First Responders Foundation and registered to volunteer at their community CPR class on May 18.
